I enjoyed the experience of the Cantoo swim so much that I continued on and di the SMH Half Marathon.
Prior to the training I had never run further than 12kms and the extra distance certainly puts some added strain on the joints but that’s all part of the challenge right?
We trainied twice a week and worked in a progressive build up to a 20km run 3 weeks before the race and then a taper of 3 shorter 10km and 11km runs just prior.
The Wednesday night sessions were at Sylvania track and we smashed ourselves pretty hard there with some solid interval training.
I got my 5km time trial time down from 23.17 to 21 flat.
Come race day I felt good and went out easy at just over 5min ks, the course through Sydney City was pretty tight and I would have like to have been able to push a bit harder at the start but litterally could not force my way through the pack. Once I did get through the pack I made good time and ended with a fair bit of go left in the tank at 1.43.17 which was 5 minutes faster than the goal time I wrote down at the beginning of the training when I had no real idea about what time I could do just that it was 10 minutes better than last years average mens time. No point in being below average was my thinking.
